Retrofit: How can airports modernize their HLC?

High-level control (HLC) software BagIQ

Baggage handling system software and hardware have varying life cycles. When maintained properly, mechanical systems can run reliably for years without needing to be replaced. The high-level control (HLC) software for the BHS, on the other hand, has a significantly shorter service life due to the pace of technological progress in the software realm coupled with the increasingly complex requirements to be met by the local airport IT. These include for example the interfaces that are needed for applying patches in order to close security gaps. This is where older HLC software often reaches its limits because it can no longer be readily updated. In addition, it lacks helpful functions for integrated system control and optimization of the BHS.

BagIQ provides airports with state-of-the-art control software that takes these developments into consideration. With useful new features like simulation of the baggage flow, access to statistics and resource planning, the software helps customers to get more out of their existing system.

An experienced partner with a strong track record

An upgrade of the existing control software involves several steps. Experts start by testing the installed hardware and software and then develop a detailed implementation plan. This enables the retrofit to be performed without any interruption to normal airport operations.

Siemens Logistics has already implemented or updated HLCs at many airports around the world, including major hubs such as Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport in France, Incheon International Airport in South Korea, Bangkok International Airport in Thailand or Mumbai International Airport in India.
