Siemens to expand the baggage handling system at Copenhagen Airport

System performance to be increased by around 30%.

Siemens Mobility and Logistics has been awarded a contract by Copenhagen Airports A/S, owner and operator of Copenhagen Airport (CPH), Kastrup, to expand the airport’s existing baggage handling system. The expansion will increase the performance of the system by around 30%. The reason for this expansion is the increasing traffic volumes at the international airport for the Danish capital. By modernizing and expanding the baggage handling system, the operator is getting ready to cope with up to ten million additional air passengers per year. The expansion and conversion work is to be carried out during ongoing operation. The contract is worth a total of around twelve million euros and specifies a completion for summer traffic 2013.

The current baggage handling system at Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup, has a total length of around nine kilometers. The expansion work will see an additional 2.5 kilometers of baggage handling equipment added to this - with the inclusion of redundant systems also planned to ensure the highest level of system availability and failsafe operation. The system will transport, scan and sort 5,000 items of luggage per hour from the summer of 2013 onwards. Siemens will provide the energy-efficient drives and process-optimized control systems and will also be responsible for the overall project management.

Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup, is the largest air transportation hub in Northern Europe and already has an annual throughput volume of 21 million passengers. By expanding the baggage handling system, the airport operator is aiming to secure its top international position as an air transportation hub for the future and to increase baggage handling reliability and speed despite increasing traffic volumes.
