Parcel Logistics Siemens opens modern new production site for postal, parcel and airport logistics in Constance

  • Innovative products and solution for customers around the globe
  • Extensive improvements from ergonomic workplaces to manufacturing and assembly processes to factory layout

Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics (SPPAL) officially opened its new production site in Constance, Germany, on February 20, 2017. "We are proud of this modern production site where we manufacture innovative products and solutions for our customers all around the world," said Michael Reichle, CEO of Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics at the inaugural ceremony. "Bringing the development and manufacture of our products together under one roof is a decisive success factor. It enables us to efficiently develop innovative and forward-looking system concepts for logistical sorting processes ready for commercial maturity." Siemens manufactures products and systems for the postal, parcel and airport logistics market in the new plant. "Thanks to the quality products we produce here as well as our automation expertise and long years of experience in software we are able to help our customers benefit from trends such as the booming e-commerce business, growing mobility worldwide and Industry 4.0."

SPPAL has made many extensive improvements to the site – from intelligent factory layout to well thought-out production and assembly processes, resulting, among other things, in shorter throughput times. And due to the higher floor loading, Siemens has been able to further expand the manufacture of heavy systems for the parcel and airport sectors.

In the production hall with a floor space of almost 14,000 square meters, the ergonomic workstations offer employees features including height-adjustable work benches and modern equipment such as cranes and hoisting gear. For a more pleasant working environment, the windows are generous in scale and the rooms flooded with daylight.

"We consistently work hard to focus on serving our customers even better in the future. Our employees, too, profit from the investments we make in the future," summed up Reichle. Following the establishment of the Innovation and Test Center for parcel logistics in Nuremberg and the move to the new headquarters in Constance, the opening of the new production site constitutes another important milestone for SPPAL in its reorganization of the company.

The new building, which was begun in November 2015, incorporates a whole series of engineering masterstrokes on the part of the constructors. 23,000 tons of earth had to be moved, for example. The soil quality around Lake Constance also called for the builders to ram almost 400 so-called in-situ concrete displacement piles into the ground, with another 2,350 concrete pillars under the foundations improving the load capacity.

SPPAL has around 3,000 employees worldwide, 600 of them in Constance. The move to the new company headquarters and the opening of a new manufacturing plant has clearly optimized the company's use of space. The previous site has been completely given up by Siemens and the premises are currently undergoing urban development.
